-After decades of work the High Seas Treaty has been adopted at the United Nations today. -The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) welcomes this historic moment having represented the shipping industry in the discussions since 2016. -The agreement takes into account the IMO’s role and is intended to cover gaps in ocean governance to ensure that emerging high seas industries will be as well-regulated as shipping is by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

 ICS welcomes Bangladesh ratification of the Hong Kong Convention

Bangladesh is one of the principal ship recyclers in the world and key to leading the way for safe and sustainable ship recycling practices by ratifying the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and 环境ally Sound Recycling of Ships (Hong Kong Convention). The Hong Kong Convention aims to ensure that ships when being recycled after reaching the end of their operational lives, do not pose any unnecessary risk to human health and safety or the environment. Ship recycling will be of significant importance in meeting net zero emissions by 2050 as the existing fleet is decommissioned in coming years to be replaced by net zero vessels.

The shipping industry is being urged to take notice of the latest amendments to the International Labour Organization (ILO) Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) detailed in a new publication update from the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), to ensure they comply and can operate and trade globally with their vessels.
