Sunil Krishnakumar is Senior Technical Manager in the marine department.

Sunil is the ICS lead providing subject matter expertise on marine fuels, air emissions, fire safety and other technical matters and is secretary of the Construction and Equipment Sub Committee and Passenger Ship Panel.

Sunil is passionate about safety of ships, especially on the safe use of fuels and is an active participant in the IMO work on marine fuel safety. He is currently involved in the development of Lifecycle GHG emission Analysis of marine fuels and the development of safety measures for the use of alternative low-and zero-carbon fuels such as Hydrogen and Ammonia. He is a chartered engineer, a member of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology and a member of the Renewable Energy Institute.

Sunil has led ICS work on sulphur issues, taking an active part in the development of IMO guidance on 2020 implementation at MEPC, PPR and MSC. He has also led ICS work on the development of various industry guidance documents such as the Guidance to Shipping Companies and Crews on Preparing for Compliance with the 2020 ‘Global Sulphur Cap’ and the Engine Room Procedures Guide.

Working for ICS has given me the opportunity to give back to an industry that is close to my heart. I am extremely proud to be playing my part in ensuring safe and sustainable shipping through technical representation at all international fora, especially at the IMO.

Prior to joining ICS in 2017, Sunil worked as a marine engineer on various types of ships. He is a qualified Chief Engineer and holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Sunil is a member of the International Council on Combustion Engines (CIMAC) WG7 on fuels.
