JOB TITLE: Communications Executive

LOCATION: Walsingham House, 35 Seething Lane, London EC3N 4AH

SALARY: Competitive, Circa £42,000 – £45,000 depending on experience (plus benefits)

REPORTING TO: Communications Manager

WORKING WITH: Chairman, Secretary-General, Members and Policy Teams

ROLE SUMMARY:

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is a not-for-profit London-based trade association for shipowners and operators, representing the world’s national shipowner associations and over 80% of the world’s merchant fleet. Established in 1921, its purpose is to ensure the development, promotion and application of best practices throughout the shipping industry encompassing issues of maritime affairs, shipping policy and technical matters, including ship construction, operation, safety and management.ICS is also the leading industry body promoting the sustainable and equitable decarbonisation of the industry.

Working with the Director of Strategy and Communications, responsible for the delivery of the ICS communications strategy across a range of media and stakeholders, to increase the profile and visibility of ICS and the shipping industry globally, reaching the wider public, non-maritime policy makers and opinion formers, to promote greater awareness of issues such as the vital contribution of shipping to the global economy and its environmental performance and support the commercial activity of the organisation.

 

JOB CONTENT: 
  • Work with the Communications Manager to execute the communications plan, to help raise the profile of the work of the ICS and promote its purpose and goals
  • Work with the Communications Manager to generate coverage in domestic and international media (print, broadcast & social) through the placing of stories, provision of comment, and distribution of press releases, arranging interviews and drafting features for journalists
  • Actively build relationships across the organisation to find and create stories, interviewing colleagues to draft succinct press releases, blogs, case studies and other relevant, compelling content for print and social channels
  • Work with the Communications manager to manage all in-coming press enquiries
  • Draft and edit the production of marketing collateral such as printed and e-newsletters
  • Consistently monitor news coverage that is relevant to ICS / global shipping / maritime / environmental issues
  • Assist in arranging key member events
  • Assist the drafting of speeches for the Chair and Secretary General
  • Responsibility for developing a calendar of events of key speakers for members
  • Ensure consistency of tone and style, and adherence to ICS brand guidelines, via all media channels
  • Work with the communications team to regularly test the effectiveness of messages and channels through questionnaires, reporting, and through building relationships, and amend where necessary
  • Responsible for the tracking and measurement of media coverage against agreed KPI’S / objectives
  • Work collaboratively with the Communications team and other divisions within ICS
  • Assist in developing content for website (photography, video, audio)
  • Assist in managing and building relationships with external suppliers and agencies as appropriate
  • Other activities as required to support the Director of Strategy and Communications or Communications Manager

 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Demonstrable experience of working with media, including print, broadcast and social, from in-house or agency background
  • Track record in writing press releases and other content specifically for the media audience and generating coverage
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills
  • An interest in current affairs / appreciation of issues that are relevant to the business community and a proven ability to generate coverage around those issues
  • A good understanding of social and traditional media and how to generate positive coverage
  • Experience in writing speeches/talking points for industry events
  • Self-driven and an ability to work on own initiative
  • Excellent English written and oral communications skills
  • Fast and accurate research, writing and copy-editing skills
  • Experience of working with a membership body and / or in a regulated industry, is desirable
  • Experience of using CISION or similar coverage and distribution system is desirable
  • Understanding of the maritime sector desirable but not essential
  • Additional language appreciated but not essential
  • Right to work in the UK
